OUTTAKES

From reading the short story, the main idea that i got from it was that no matter who you are or what you do. Someone that you don't even know can see something in you that you never thought you had. We see this when the theater manager sees this kid in a crowd of people. He says " It was the theater manager who later explained to him that out of all the spectators he was the only one with the haloed profile of a pyromaniac, that in a black-and-white night the flames had played techni-color on his face". This sentence really shows that even during a fire which is a time where people are in panic. A stranger can find some talent that you could be hiding.

The writer does well with transitioning from a panic situation to a great moment when he offers the kid a job at the theater. I think that the writer does the best writing on the second page where he writes, "Him, the kid who watched fires as if he set them, whose other costumes has been altar boy, newspaper boy, and all-American boy as Mickey Rooney might have played it". I thought that this was another great sentence because it shows all of the different things that this kid had to go through before someone really noticed what his true talent was.

  1. Yes, and life is so like this sometimes. What gets left on the cutting room floor or the things only a select few know, well, sometimes those are the "outtakes" that make us who we are. Good job!
